Grace’s Story
Grace is a young girl who has experienced significant family, health, and protection challenges. She was performing well in school and had just completed Primary 3 when her life situation changed unexpectedly.
Grace’s mother works as a caretaker for a property, living in a small room on the premises while managing household duties and rental units. The property owner had promised to take Grace to Kampala to live with her and support her education. However, instead of enrolling her in school, Grace was kept as a domestic helper for two years, during which she did not attend school.
After this was discovered, Grace was brought back to her family in the village.
Grace is living with complicated health issues, which she acquired from her mother. In 2023, during her time away from home, her treatment was not consistently maintained, and she was not regularly collecting her medication from the clinic, leading to concerns. The hospital has had limited recent updates due to interruptions in follow-up care.
Grace comes from a large family. She is the third-born child. One sibling sadly passed away at the age of four due to illness. Her eldest sibling, aged 15, has never attended school due to financial constraints. A 12-year-old sibling has dropped out of school and is working as a maid for a neighbour. The youngest sibling, a 5-year-old boy, currently lives with their mother.
Grace is now staying at Manna Rescue Home, where she is beginning to understand the importance of taking her medication consistently and returning to school.
